THE 11TH ANNUAL
FESTIVAL OF ONE-ACT PLAYS
ON
THE SECOND STAGE
Theatre Three presents the 11th
Annual Festival of One-Act Plays which opens on March 2 for a
10-performance run. As always, the evening offers a diverse and
unusual range of works to entertain, to intrigue, and to
fascinate.
Over the
past 10 seasons, the Festival has presented over 50 premieres of
plays submitted from across the world. This year, five have been
selected from some 650 submissions:
Cast of Characters by Philip Dawkins;
The Insured by Sandra Hosking;
A Matter of Days by Dennis Jones;
The Play About the Menu at Simon's Coffee
Shop by D.T. Arcieri; and Rats
by Shaun Raviv.
The dozen
actors who make up this year's company include returning
performers Steve Ayle, Dana Bush, Heath Cohen, Lois Goelz, Jim
Lingner, Linda May, and Festival veteran Brian Smith, who has
appeared in eight previous Festivals and 18 plays. They will be
joined by Michael Butera, Bob Lingner, Sara Suvak, Sophie
Vanier, and, in his Theatre Three debut, Stephen Wangner. The
evening is directed by
Executive Artistic Director Jeffrey Sanzel (who has directed
nine out of the
10 previous Festivals) and original music is being composed by
Jennifer Testa, whose work has included four previous Festivals.
The evening will be
stage managed by Maureen Spanos.
Cast of Characters is a pointed
look at familial relationships, focusing on three sisters and
their mother's 80th birthday party. The entire company takes
part in this highly theatrical and truly unique exploration.
The Insured is a hilariously
scathing look at our country's deteriorating state of health
insurance, and features Bush, Butera, and Jim Lingner.
A Matter of Days is a haunting
presentation of various stages of a marriage in a single day
–
or is it? Heading the piece is May along with Jim and Bob
Lingner, Butera, and Smith. The Play About
the Menu at Simon's Coffee Shop follows the complicated
machinations of relationships and a look at life's basic needs,
with Ayle, Cohen, Suvak, and Vanier. (Author Arcieri's play,
Norman, was the first piece ever
presented in our One-Act Festival.) Rats
is an outrageous send-up of political correctness as two rodents
(Smith and Wangner) negotiate over a piece of cheese.
